Lewis County's roughly 3,700 residents are spread across rolling Camas Prairie farmland, and its electorate has tilted Republican by double digits for decades — reaching a 65-point margin in 2024.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Lewis County peaked at fifty-two points in 1964; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1996 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of ten points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Lewis County's median household income of $51,615 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 15% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Lincoln County and Clearwater County.
