Ascension Parish sits along the Mississippi between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, its population swelled by refinery and chemical plant workers. It has shifted from a competitive Cajun-country parish to one of the most reliably Republican suburban counties in Louisiana over the past two decades.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Ascension Parish peaked at eighty-two points in 1892; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2000 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of eleven points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.

The economic and demographic context is severe. Ascension Parish's median household income of $91,549 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 10% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of McCracken County and Pontotoc County.
