Rockingham County, anchored by Eden along the Virginia border, has shifted steadily rightward over two decades as its manufacturing-era Democratic base eroded; the 2024 presidential margin of R+35.8 reflects one of the sharpest realignments in the Piedmont region.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Rockingham County peaked at sixty-five points in 1940; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty-two points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Rockingham County's median household income of $57,053 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 16% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Burke County and Fall River County.
