Perry County's R+69.5 margin in 2024 places it among the most one-sided rural counties in the state. With fewer than 8,000 residents and an economy long tied to timber and small-scale agriculture, its electorate moves in near-unanimous fashion in federal contests.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Perry County peaked at sixty-two points in 1936; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2008 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of nine points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.

The economic and demographic context is severe. Perry County's median household income of $55,972 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 18% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Stewart County and Overton County.
