Bowie County's presidential margins have exceeded R+40 in each of the last three cycles, driven by a predominantly rural, working-class electorate centered on Texarkana's Texas side. Its cross-state border city adds an unusual twin-metro dynamic rare in rural East Texas.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Bowie County peaked at eighty-three points in 1936; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2000 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty-two points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Bowie County's median household income of $59,803 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 16% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Vernon Parish and Sabine Parish.
