Reagan County sits in the Permian Basin, where an economy built almost entirely on oil and ranching has long produced some of the widest Republican presidential margins in the state — 2024's R+69.4 was typical, not exceptional.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Reagan County peaked at 100 points in 1912; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1968 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of eight points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.

The economic and demographic context is severe. Reagan County's median household income of $57,813 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 12% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Crane County and Andrews County.
