Walton County's resort corridor and rural inland precincts together produced an R+57.8 presidential margin in 2024, making it one of the most reliably one-sided counties in a state that itself has shifted sharply rightward over the past decade.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Walton County peaked at seventy-eight points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1980 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of four points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Walton County's median household income of $81,986 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 13% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of White County and Madison County.
