Harris County, tucked along Georgia's western border with Alabama, has delivered lopsided Republican margins for decades, with its small, predominantly rural population showing little of the suburban volatility reshaping much of the rest of the state.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Harris County peaked at ninety-six points in 1920; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1984 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Harris County's median household income of $97,302 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 9% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Habersham County and Dawson County.
