Pickens County, anchored by Jasper in the southern Appalachian foothills, recorded an R+65.8 margin in 2024—among the widest gaps in a state whose statewide results have grown consistently closer over the same period.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Pickens County peaked at forty-five points in 1976; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1996 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of five points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Pickens County's median household income of $78,930 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 12% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Rabun County and Union County.
