Toombs County, anchored by Vidalia and its famous sweet onion trade, has posted Republican presidential margins above 40 points in every cycle since 2008, reflecting a rural southeast Georgia electorate that moves little regardless of the top of the ticket.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Toombs County peaked at ninety-four points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1984 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of thirty points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.

The economic and demographic context is severe. Toombs County's median household income of $52,621 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 23% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Thomas County and Carroll County.
