Koochiching, anchored by International Falls on the Canadian border, was once a union-inflected timber and paper-mill community that voted competitively; by 2024 it backed the Republican ticket by more than 25 points.
The county's recent history is a story of close margins. The Democratic margin reached fifty-eight points in 1936; the Republican margin reached thirty-two points in 1924. Most other elections have been decided by single-digit points.
Koochiching County's demographics — a population of 11,833, a 90% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $66,940 — situate the county close to national averages on several dimensions. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Hill County and Swift County.
