Pine County's economy traces back to logging and small agriculture along the St. Croix watershed, and its largely white, working-class electorate has widened Republican presidential margins by roughly 25 points since 2000.

The 2012 election was the turning point, when the Republican candidate carried the county by one points. The 2024 margin was thirty-five points, in line with the county's new direction.

The demographics suggest why. A population of 29,640, a 89% non-Hispanic-white share, and a median household income of $71,146 situate the county in the broader realignment patterns of recent cycles. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Jefferson County and Big Stone County.
