Hyde is one of North Carolina's least populous counties, with much of its land sitting below sea level in the Pamlico and Pungo river lowlands. It has shifted toward Republican margins over the past two decades as its small, rural electorate consolidated.
The shift began with civil rights. 2012 marked the realignment in Hyde County, by a one points margin. The Republican margin reached its widest at forty-six points in 1972. The 2024 margin was twenty-two points.
The political shift has tracked, in Hyde County, the political shift of the South more broadly. A 58% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $53,713, and a 22% poverty rate describe the demographic context. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Caswell County and Moody County.
