Washita County, a sparsely populated farming and ranching county on the western Oklahoma plains, recorded a 74.8-point Republican presidential margin in 2024, placing it among the state's most reliably one-sided jurisdictions.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Washita County peaked at seventy-four points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1996 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of two points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Washita County's median household income of $63,501 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 14% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Beckham County and Liberty County.
