Beckham County, anchored by Elk City along I-40, posted an R+70 presidential margin in 2024 — a gap that reflects both the area's deep-rooted conservative lean and its predominantly rural, energy-sector workforce.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Beckham County peaked at seventy-four points in 1932; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1996 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of two points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Beckham County's median household income of $53,328 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 22% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Washita County and Liberty County.
