Douglas County recorded an R+72.4 margin in the 2024 presidential race, placing it among the most one-sided counties in the country. Its roughly 3,400 residents are spread across a largely agricultural landscape in south-central South Dakota.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Douglas County peaked at fifty-five points in 2000; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of sixty points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Douglas County's median household income of $86,442 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 11% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Jones County and Harding County.
