Home to Odessa, Ector County's economy runs on petroleum extraction, and that industrial identity has reinforced an R+50-plus presidential margin for well over a decade, making it one of West Texas's most reliably one-sided counties.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Ector County peaked at ninety-seven points in 1916; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1952 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty-two points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Ector County's median household income of $71,536 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 17% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Andrews County and Reagan County.
