Amherst sits along Virginia's Blue Ridge foothills with a population under 32,000, and its presidential margins have grown increasingly lopsided — the 2024 gap of 36.5 points reflects a rural realignment pattern common across Southside and Piedmont Virginia.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Amherst County peaked at eighty-four points in 1916; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1968 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of seventeen points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.

The economic and demographic context is severe. Amherst County's median household income of $68,724 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 11% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Highlands County and Logan County.
