Douglas County, anchored by Superior and its union-heavy port economy, gave Democrats a 5-point margin in 2024 even as much of rural Wisconsin moved sharply right — a remnant of the Iron Range–style labor politics that once defined the western Great Lakes.
The Democratic margin in Douglas County reached its widest at fifty-four points in 1964. The margin in 2024 was five points — still decisive.
Douglas County's loyalty is rooted in its place. Median household income of $75,099, a 90% non-Hispanic-white share, and a population of 44,229 together describe a community whose political habits are deeply settled. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of St. Louis County and Carlton County.
