Bullock County's electorate is roughly 75% Black, producing some of the largest Democratic margins in the state — the 2024 presidential result sat at D+45.8, a figure that has held relatively stable across recent cycles.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Bullock County peaked at 100 points in 1904; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1968 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of forty-one points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.

The economic and demographic context is severe. Bullock County's median household income of $31,310 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 33% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Jefferson County and Sumter County.
