Choctaw sits in Alabama's historically Black Belt, where a majority-Black population and low overall turnout combine to produce competitive precinct-level splits even as the county-wide margin ran nearly 24 points Republican in 2024.
The shift began with civil rights. 2004 marked the realignment in Choctaw County, by a eight points margin. The Republican margin reached its widest at eighty-six points in 1964. The 2024 margin was twenty-four points.
The political shift has tracked, in Choctaw County, the political shift of the South more broadly. A 57% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $47,813, and a 17% poverty rate describe the demographic context. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Yalobusha County and Red River Parish.
