A rural north Louisiana parish where timber and agriculture define the economy, Union recorded an R+57 margin in 2024 — among the most one-sided results in the state and a signal of how thoroughly small rural parishes have shifted over the past two decades.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Union Parish peaked at ninety-eight points in 1924; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1972 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of forty-six points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Union Parish's median household income of $42,885 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 29% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Tattnall County and Bradford County.
