Franklin County's small, rural population has delivered lopsided Republican margins for over a decade, and its 2024 result of R+39.8 reflects a voting pattern consistent with the rural Southwest Mississippi timber-country corridor.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Franklin County peaked at ninety-six points in 1940; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1984 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty-six points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Franklin County's median household income of $52,939 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 25% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Greenwood County and Marion County.
