Anchored by Clovis and its adjacent Cannon Air Force Base, Curry County combines a military-linked workforce with deep rural ties to the eastern plains, producing consistent Republican margins that have exceeded 40 points in recent cycles.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Curry County peaked at sixty-three points in 1936; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1968 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty-six points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Curry County's median household income of $57,309 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 21% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Canyon County and Platte County.
