Davie County, a small Piedmont community of roughly 35,000, has delivered lopsided Republican presidential margins for decades, with its 2024 result of R+46.2 placing it among the state's most one-sided counties.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Davie County peaked at forty-seven points in 2000; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of forty-nine points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Davie County's median household income of $75,057 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 9% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Avery County and Iredell County.
