Onslow County's political profile is shaped heavily by its military population: Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River together drive one of the highest active-duty concentrations of any county in the country, contributing to a consistently wide Republican margin.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Onslow County peaked at eighty-four points in 1936; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of thirty-nine points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Onslow County's median household income of $68,148 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 12% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Rowan County and Harnett County.
