Sully County's roughly 1,500 residents are spread across nearly 1,000 square miles of Missouri River plateau, and its presidential margins have exceeded R+50 in every cycle since at least 2000.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Sully County peaked at forty-nine points in 2000; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of fifty-five points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Sully County's median household income of $72,578 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 6% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Stanley County and Jones County.
