Haskell County's cattle-country economy and sparse population of roughly 6,000 have anchored some of the widest presidential margins in west-central Texas, with the 2024 result hitting R+71.4 — a gap that has widened steadily over two decades.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Haskell County peaked at eighty-nine points in 1936; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2000 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of three points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.

The economic and demographic context is severe. Haskell County's median household income of $60,653 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 17% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Ottawa County and Love County.
