Despite its reputation as a playground for the affluent, Nantucket delivered a 36-point Democratic margin in 2024, reflecting a broader pattern of college-educated, high-income coastal communities drifting sharply left over the past decade.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Nantucket County peaked at forty-five points in 2020; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 1988 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of twenty points. By 2024, the margin had settled into deep Republican territory.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Nantucket County's median household income of $139,688 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 3% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Dukes County and Ramsey County.
