Yadkin County, a rural Piedmont community of roughly 36,000, delivered a 62-point Republican presidential margin in 2024 — among the widest in North Carolina — reflecting its heavily white, non-college demographic profile and deep roots in small-scale agriculture.
The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Yadkin County peaked at fifty-three points in 2000; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of fifty-five points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.
The economic and demographic context is severe. Yadkin County's median household income of $62,932 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 14% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Randolph County and Davidson County.
