Campbell County's 2024 presidential margin of R+70.1 ranks it among the most one-sided jurisdictions in the country, a reflection of the deeply rural, agriculture-dependent character that defines this sparsely populated corner of north-central South Dakota.

The unraveling was not abrupt. The Democratic margin in Campbell County peaked at sixty-five points in 2000; it narrowed steadily over the late twentieth century. The 2004 election delivered the county to the Republican party for the first time in many years, by a margin of forty-nine points. By 2024, the margin had widened further.

The economic and demographic context is severe. Campbell County's median household income of $68,929 is among the lowest of any county in the United States; 8% of residents live below the federal poverty line. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Yadkin County and Harding County.
