Crittenden County, anchored by West Memphis, is one of the few Arkansas counties to return Democratic presidential margins, a pattern rooted in its majority-Black population and historic Delta economy along the Mississippi.
The county's recent history is a story of close margins. The Democratic margin reached ninety-eight points in 1936; the Republican margin reached forty-two points in 1972. Most other elections have been decided by single-digit points.
Crittenden County's demographics — a population of 47,266, a 39% non-Hispanic-white share, a median household income of $55,358 — situate the county close to national averages on several dimensions. The county's voting pattern over the last decade is most similar to that of Jefferson County and Randolph County.
